Templar Castle of Ponferrada during the Knights Templar celebration
TEMPLARS, PILGRIMS ROUTE OF SANTIAGO, PONFERRADA
Since the Middle Ages, pilgrimage to Santiago had a stop in Ponferrada.
Thousands of pilgrims have travelled the Route of Santiago for centuries. Only Faith and natural medicine have allowed them to stay alive till their destination.
The medicinal tradition of our region was enriched by the knowledge of plants pilgrims from all over Europe brought with them.
Over time, monasteries and fortresses emerge giving shelter to pilgrims and attending their illnesses with natural remedies used for centuries by monks and alchemists.
In 1178 Knights Templar settled in Ponferrada and built a fortress to protect pilgrims. Travelling on horseback between Jerusalem and Old Europe, Knights Templar were ahead their time on techniques and science.
